This is one of my newest creations and is from my Konstrunda 2008 show. I had a difficult time photographing it indoors because the flash reflected off the fake gold coins.
Karavan (caravan) honors the memory of all the people kidnapped from their homes and into slavery. People were traded along the Silk Road as well as fabric and spices. The camel beads (made from camel bone) symbolize the caravan routes; the gold coins the greed that lay behind the slave trade. The 3 red beads symbolize the blood of the oppressed; the small stone beads, the hardness of the road they were made to travel.
Deep background on this. Truly disturbing detail with the drops of blood. I like the combination of textile and metal. The chain gives the creation a powerfull energy.
